B.C. Throne Speech shows no committment to spending cuts

Author: Maureen Bader 2010/02/12

The BC government delivered its Throne Speech on February 9. In the past, we've had speeches that focused on narrow special interests - health care, new relationship, green machines, and housing. But this time, the speech was more of a hodgepodge that barely touched on the most serious problems we have today - the deficit and skyrocketing debt.

This government has a spending problem, not a revenue problem.  Under this government, spending has spiraled far higher than anything seen under the NDP and brought us back into a deficit. To get rid of the deficit, we need to see a real reduction in spending, not merely a freeze at the current inflated level.

Eliminating the deficit and debt are key to ensuring our children and grandchildren are not left with a legacy of debt.

To make matters worse, the government's green corporate welfare program will likely see more hard earned tax dollars be distributed from taxpayers' pockets to green pet projects. Perhaps our premier has been too busy basking in the warmth of the Olympic limelight to notice the crumbling credibility of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and its claim of global warming Armageddon. The last thing we need right now is a large-scale corporate welfare program promoting expensive green energy schemes.

On the plus side, the government appears to have heard the call to rein-in out-of-control municipal governments and their gouging property tax increases. A new Joint Committee on Property Tax Reform will review what to do to stop municipal governments from driving industry from this province.
